Kanter Gets Maxed
Kanter Gets Maxed
In perhaps one of the last extensions of the season, Enes Kanter and the Cleveland Cavaliers have reached an agreement on a maximum extension. Locking in their two key pieces through extensions, the Cavs look to push towards the playoffs and for the final seed in the Eastern Conference.
Kanter's extension will begin after this season. Starting at the maximum salary level for players with less than six years of CSL experience ($13,668,750), the contract contains maximum raises (7.5%) and totals $60,825,938 over four years.

Re: Kanter Gets Maxed
That's quite the price for Kanter, especially since he's only had one season so far where he's shot over 50%. And since he's going to be an RFA this summer, there was no reason to max extend him right now, you essentially guaranteed the worst case scenario cap wise for yourself with no competition. If you were willing to max him, might as well let him go to free agency, try to sign him to a more cap-friendly deal, and then just match if someone else signs him.

More that I think about it, the more I realize it makes no sense to extend RFAs if you are willing to pay top dollar for them.

This is exactly what Golden State was trying to avoid by trading him. Not a fan of this payday, I definitely don't think he's worth a max deal. There's a ton of good centers in this league, and I'm not sure he really stands out.

I think only real superstars deserve in-season extensions at max money but they gave up a great pick for Kanter so I won't argue. Their team looks damn strong once Millsap is back.

Wow there was no need for this extension at all

I love Kanter, but I think this was premature. I would have put on my gambling face and played my hand in free agency, because I'm not sure anyone would have offered him the max.
But with that said, I really do like him and he's a good guy to have locked up longterm. Before I got Vucevic, he was certainly a target of mine.

Massive overpay but with the amount of money some teams have in FA, someone would have paid him to steal him so they probably just said why not do it now.

Re: Kanter Gets Maxed
Aaaand this is why I always let RFAs go to FA. Always a chance to pay less than the max, and if they're good enough, I'll just match the max anyway. Kantner is in no way a max player, but like Myles said, since the Cavs were obviously willing to do that, why not try and get him cheaper?

Would anyone tie up their money into Kanter though? Knowing he's an RFA? Even if they did I doubt they'd give him the max considering his offensive inefficiency but who knows. He's young I suppose. You can't really steal an RFA, he could have matched any offer. Irving/Wade/Mitchell/Millsap/Kanter is interesting though.

Re: Kanter Gets Maxed
RFA is a non feature in sim leagues and doesn't have anywhere near the impact it does in real life so yeah, he should have waited. If someone throws a max at a non-RFA in the NBA, that's real money being spent and you let him walk but here, teams still match just because they don't want to lose someone for nothing.
I agree it's huge overpay but there are too many teams with cap space. Someone probably throws big money at him just for fun and in case the Cavs didn't match.

Re: Kanter Gets Maxed
It makes you wonder if that is what Kanter demanded, or if that is the number the Cavs threw out at the beginning....
