Hollins and Vogel: Top Picks
Lionel Hollins (L) and Frank Vogel (R)
Good morning everyone and welcome to today's edition of Hollins and Vogel. The CSL season may be right around the corner, but today we'll be talking about the draft (yes, already!) and who should be going #1 overall. I know, I know, everyone is saying tank for Wiggins right? Well our coaches are going to give us their thoughts on who should be picked.
Hollins: First of all, I'm going to go on record as saying that Andrew Wiggins will be the first overall pick, barring an absolute disaster of a season. Which could happen, we've seen previous surefire studs not do so well at the college level, Harrison Barnes coming to mind. The guy I want to talk about though, is a young point guard from Kentucky named Andrew Harrison. He's a 6'5" point guard (think about that for a second. A 6'5" point guard) who has a great natural scoring instinct. Way I see it, this kid is going to be a leading scorer who takes care of the ball and plays great defense. He reminds me of what Russell Westbrook could be if Westbrook was 6'5". That's how good Harrison could be.
Vogel: I agree with you that Harrison could be a dynamite player, but to be honest, I'm not seeing a number 1 pick. He doesn't have the point guard skills I look for, and while his ability to create is nothing to sneeze at, his shot selection and ability to hit shots may be something that gives you pause. I'm going with a different Kentucky product, the hyper-athletic, incredibly talented Julius Randle. He is a bit raw on the edges and does need some coaching, but every young big man does. He has the potential to be a 2-way monster who can kill you both offensively and defensively. That's not something you see in a lot of prospects. Reminds me of a big man version of a player I used to coach in Paul George.
Hollins: That's a bit of an exaggeration, I think Randle is good but he'll require quite a bit of coaching to reach his ceiling. If we are talking about big scorers, no one separates himself from the pack like Anthony Bennett does. If someone could get that boy to work on his conditioning, he'd be unstoppable. As of right now, he's his own worst enemy. When he gets after it, he will score no matter what.
Vogel: Nobody wants to draft a player #1 overall if they have to motivate him just to work out every day. That spells lazy, and lazy spells bust. I want a kid with fire, I want a kid who takes no nonsense and dishes it right back, and I'm saying Jahii Carson out of Arizona State is that kid. He's a hustler, he's a fighter, he plays hard on both ends of the court, he can score, he can run an offense-
Hollins: He's 5'11"! Too undersized!
Vogel: But he's got heart, and I think Muggsy Bogues has proven to all of us that size disadvantages can be overcome.
Hollins: I don't want a pint-sized player on my team.
Vogel: I think we can both agree though, that as of right now, before the college season has started, Andrew Wiggins is a near-lock to go first overall.
Hollins: Yeah, the only reason I see him not going first overall is if he decides not to declare. I doubt that happens.
