Fran Fraschilla: Micic-Mania
After a ton of media proclaiming this guy as one of the top PGs in the draft, it's no surprise that Vasilije Micic has been drawing a lot of attention. A 6'4" point guard out of Serbia, Micic has a lot going for him in terms of physical stature as well as positional need. Teams drool over pass-first floor general point guards, and Micic is certainly one of those guys. While Micic's game is still a bit rough around the edges, no one can deny that the talent is there.
Micic's biggest skill so far has been his utter knowledge of the game. He doesn't make a lot of mistakes and has great court awareness, finding teammates for open shots that many other point guards wouldn't be able to find. He struggles with turnovers at times, and his passing has yet to reach it's full potential, but he shows that vision that seems almost unteachable. He doesn't look to score too much, and his jump shot certainly needs work, but he has good form so with time he might turn into a serviceable threat offensively.
He reminds me a lot of Jason Kidd or Rajon Rondo in terms of a well-rounded game, as he rebounds well and his defense is decent enough for a point guard. While Micic will never lead the PGs in any category, he'll contribute everywhere on the court, and at 6'4", you could even put him at SG and have a great passing backcourt. He's a versatile player, but there's no doubt in anyone's mind, he's best as a floor general and most likely the best floor general in this class.
However, a word of caution. He's not ever going to be an elite floor general. At his best, he might be a rich man's Steve Blake, or perhaps an end-of-their-career version of Kidd or Andre Miller. Picking him in the lottery seems surprising to me, given the amount of talent in this draft, however, I could see a team needing a floor general reaching for him and being completely satisfied.
