CSL Tonite! System For Success
Hi! I'm Mindy Mindy and welcome to CSL Tonite!
Today we have Steve Smith who'll be analyzing the different systems teams use in the CSL. Smitty... take it away!
All right Mindy let's get things started with the world champs, the Miami Heat... they use a traditional system with a PG in Isaiah Thomas who can get his offense off anytime but the key is ball movement, having a big like a Pau Gasol who can get buckets in the post and a Tyson Chandler who can finish around the basket... both are excellent passers as well...and then there's Kevin Durant who can shoot it from distance and get points from anywhere on the floor as you can see here and this was key in them getting their 2nd championship in 2 years.
Next up Mindy, you have the runner up, the Western Conference champion Houston Rockets... you've heard of the 1 in 4 out system where they spread the floor leaving only 1 big in the middle? Well Houston runs a 5 OUT (laughs), they bucked conventional wisdom to keep the lane completely devoid of defense to get guys like Andre Iguodala off, they like to get him on the break and boy can he finish, they use Manu, Iggy, and Harden all as playmakers while a guy like Bargnani sneaks in and gets a bucket or two from the weakside then off course you have a James harden who attacks the basket, drawing fouls and getting to the line or spotting up from downtown for the 3.
Next Mindy you have the OKC System which I think is even more unconventional as they have a 2 PG system which we'll get into in a bit, they use the guards to attack the basket and knock down open jumpers, they have the big guy in the middle Dwight Howard getting baskets in the post for them and then they have TWO count em Mindy! TWO SF's, one being Corey Brewer and of course the other being LeBron James who lines up at the PF spot where he can take other teams bigs and take em off the dribble or all the way to the rack for the jam!
Then of course there's the standard system which is ran by teams like the Bobcats/ Hornets, the Jazz, the Spurs, and the Bucks and other teams as well where they rely on a main scorer such as a Kobe Bryant or a Mike Conley or a big or bigs who can crash the boards to score baskets like a Tim Duncan or an Ekpe Udoh or create their own offense like a Marc Gasol of the Bucks.
Then last up Mindy you have the 2 PG system which was made famous by the late 80's early 90's Pistons and used by the mid 90's Rockets, both back to back world champs and as you can see that style has been brought to the CSL first used by the Cavs who enjoyed a successful run with Jose Calderon and Kyrie Irving in the backcourt which has since been emulated by the Bulls and the Celtics as well by having a Derrick Rose and Monta Ellis or a Dennis Schroder and a George Hill in the backcourt creating most of the offense for their teams...other teams such as the Raptors, Pistons and the Pacers, and also the Hawks have used this system and I expect it to continue to flourish in the League.
Smitty... which system do you think has led to more team success?
Well Mindy I'm going with the system that works and gets wins and that's the Miami Heat System but of course you have to have the players with the skills that can play disciplined basketball in each system but I'm goin' with the Heat... they're back to back champions although there are some teams that are comin' for them but I really like what the GM, OP has done down there in South Beach...
There are some really talented and creative GM's out there and I'm sure each one'll find their niche with their respective teams BUT I also have to say things may change since this is the offseason and some of these players might not be back with their respective teams so there's gonna be alot to look forward to this coming season...
Thanks Smitty... that'll do it for this edition of CSL Tonite! Chime in on your favorite system and let us know what you think! I'm Mindy Mindy... thanks for watching!

What's the difference between the Heat and the traditional? After reading this, it sounds like they are virtually the same?

Thanks dapralbe!
They are indeed identical with the exception of one key thing... Kevin freakin' Durant
Nah they're similar except Miami has good passing bigs, better than most traditional lineups or higher IQ than most units, they also are 2 7fters which Smitty didn't mention.

Very interesting. Great stuff. Hard to argue with your own style, Willy... All depends on personnel though.

Nice read man. It was more of a starting lineup breakdown rather than strategies (I understand we can't see each others so there's some mystery there), but interesting nonetheless.

I think we as GM's get sucked into just dealing for talent where as we should really be building a team to suit a style. They have been the most successful teams I've seen in leagues.

I voted for traditional, simply because I believe that each player should have a role and sometimes it's not always scoring. The traditional method is tried and true and I like sticking to it.

It was a combination of starting lineups, DC strategies, and stats.
@ Myles, yeah the standard system is great but also hard to be as successful as other teams without the right personnel and pretty much anyone next to Tim Duncan is the right personnel.

Re: CSL Tonite! System For Success
First off, great article!
I voted standard system because it just gives everyone a role on the team that is typical to their position. I think the Heat's system is the best although the talent level has to be there across all five positions to make it effective.

I voted 2 PG system, probably not the most effective out of all of them but it's my favourite.

I vote for none of these.

It all depends on the personnel. There's no one size fits all system, so I don't think you can ever say there's a best system.
