Parka Not Worried About Heat's Financial Situation
Parka Not Worried About Heat's Financial Situation
June 25, 2014
"We sat down and had a long talk with Mickey [Arison]," Parka said. "He's no less committed to winning than I am, and that reflects very positively throughout the organization."
The Heat have avoided the L2 tax threshold until now, but could potentially cross it this Offseason depending on how negotiations with the team's three main free agents in Pau Gasol, Isaiah Thomas, and Spencer Hawes goes.
The team also added three young players on rookie-scale contracts this season in Rudy Gobert, AJ Hammons, and Adreian Payne.
"We feel pretty good coming off our second straight championship," Parka said. "We have a great team, and our guys have expressed a lot of interest in returning."
Parka emphasized that the team's financial situation will "only get better from here on out", and that the organization will not hesitate to bite the bullet for this season in keeping its free agents.
"We'll see what happens," Parka said. "We feel like we have a lot of options moving forward."

Re: Parka Not Worried About Heat's Financial Situation
Like I said, financial concerns shouldn't dampen the first two seasons in Miami. Cap constraints won't take away the two championships you guys have won. With that said, it will be fun to see the bidding war for Isaiah Thomas.

I think there's no chance you're able to re-sign all 3 of Hawes, Gasol, and Thomas. You're right below the L2 line with IT on the smallest contract possible and Hawes on a very manageable contract, but now you're going to have to give him near-max, not to mention Gasol and Hawes should demand large contracts.
Good luck with that, but I don't think it's even feasible.

Yeah I don't see you re-signing all three without going over the hard cap or at least into massive luxury tax penalties. My guess is Gasol will be the easiest to bring back, but with teams lining up to splash the cash on IT and Hawes.

Biyombo hurt *2nd Heat Championship
I think this is a smokescreen thread and honestly wouldn't be surprised if parka trades Splitter for caproom to attempt to bring back all 3 cause the chance to 3peat may overrule chasing cash at least for Hawes and Gasol.
Miami has the perfect situation to bring their guys back if they want to imo.

OP isn't worried about the financial situation YET. Until he sees the type of offers he's going to have to compete with for Gasol, Hawes and especially IT.

Lol, his eyes will be the size of dinner plates once he sees IT's offers lol.
Nah but really has no choice but to match and or resign these guys then trade em worse case instead of being outbid or losing them without some type of compensation.
Then of course there's always the option to sign and trade a guy.

Match? He can't match any of these guys. IT is a 2nd round pick, so no RFA status.

For the record we'll be at around 60m before these three FA sign.

Even if all of them get 7 mill a year deals, you'll be at 81 mill at least. I think it's safe to say that won't happen for sure with IT, possibly with Hawes, and I think somewhere in the 5-7 mill range is where Gasol will get paid.

Re: Parka Not Worried About Heat's Financial Situation
Eh I'd offer IT not too much more than that on like a five year deal. If not, he's free to walk. He's easily the most replaceable guy on the roster and benefits a ton from how we play, and I don't wanna have a bad contract on my hands.
Gasol and Hawes are more interesting. Gasol declined again and is 33, so I really don't know what type of offers he'll get.

Wait, you don't plan on offering IT more than 7 mil? You might as well say goodbye to him now, because there's absolutely zero chance he doesn't sign for more than that. He'll be in the double digits imo.
As for Gasol and Hawes, I think you're looking at ~8 on a couple year deal for Pau and 5-7 for Hawes depending on where the rest of the many centers land. If someone strikes out on Okafor, Gortat, etc. they'll be more willing to spend on Hawes because they're desperate.

Can't argue you with the IT statement. I HIGHLY doubt he will prosper elsewhere the way he did with you, but there will be a GM who is starved for a starting pg/sixth man who will pay for his services.
As for Hawes, typically if a big is getting paid more than 7-8 mill a year he is damn near elite/at least at an all-star level on at least one end of the floor, otherwise it's a bad contract. With that said, Hawes is not at an elite/all-star level on either end of the floor. I think there's a good chance you get him on a good deal, but then again, like I said above, there will probably be some GM who will offer him something serious.

Re: Parka Not Worried About Heat's Financial Situation
Then I likely won't keep him. There's a PG I'm likely acquiring soon who fill in decently as well as a couple of decent PG FAs who may sign for the minimum.
I mean, a guy like Earl Watson nearly put up a double-double as a starter on our team... And a guy like Devin Harris who has similar ratings and went for the MLE.
Obviously that PG or whoever I get in FA won't be as good as IT, but I don't see the difference to be that of a rookie-scale and 10m+ (Or whatever he'll get) contract, especially with Shump's growth as a scorer.
Ya'll are free to bid for him.

Haha - OP be posturing. This is a guy who put IT in the top 5 point guards in the league - and now he isn't worth but $8m?
Yeah. Okay.
Yeah. Okay.

Well a lot of guys had off years or were injured. No one would say IT's a top 5 PG on his own.
Production-wise though he arguably did.

Re: Parka Not Worried About Heat's Financial Situation
Haha possibly. I'm just being honest though. With my finances, another max-type contract isn't ideal, and I'm not spending it on a guy I see as quite replaceable.
There's just no way I'm gonna give him max no matter what.
Shumpert is much more important, as will PJ3 be in two years.

It's the game. Some people come out and say I'm giving max no matter what to put others off and wonder why offer and others say he's not worth to do the same.

I don't smokescreen. I was honest bout Splitter last season in saying that we'd keep him no matter what, and we did.
Just don't really see the point in it. People will do what they themselves plan to do IMO.

All very intersting to read. Seems like Isaiah Thomas will be a hot target this off season...I'm very intrigued to see how it all unfolds.

Haha honestly though. Even in the draft I've always been very honest about who I wanted and stuff like that.
