Perfection
Obviously this is subjective but I thought it might be fun to compare how we value/view the 'perfect' player, city and women. Or man, whatever floats your proverbial boat.
3 questions:
1) your "perfect" basketball player using whatever criteria you want?
2) your "perfect" city using whatever criteria you want?
3) your "perfect" women/man (celebrity) using whatever criteria you want?
1) Kareem. Duncan is my favourite player, and historically Hakeem is a bit underrated but in terms of numbers Kareem rules.
2. Milano/Toronto
3. Norah Jones

Defense wrote:I’ve read and watched as much as I can about him online and seen interviews (the few he’s done). He comes off as highly intelligent but also standoffish. I’ve always wondered if his conversion to Islam was why “America” diminished him but what’s ironic about Ali did the same thing and was beloved.
"I read Malcolm X's book and that made me convert," he says. "Ali was first involved with Elijah Muhammad and his group's brand of racism was no better than the racism in the south. They were anti-white and, I guess, at times anti-Semitic. And racism stinks no matter who's the intended victim.”
- Kareem
To be fair Ali became an American icon when he lost the ability to speak, but it highlights how fair minded Kareem was/is. I don’t know what to make of his legendary appearance in “Airplane!”, more so his interaction with the kid. Maybe it humanized him to a degree? The kid (Joey) was interviewed many years later and had this to say.
And also, you really are roughed up by Kareem Abdul Jabbar, you know? As an untrained actor, was he a little too rough at first, or did he do all right?
"Well, he's huge. And at 10 years old he was gigantic to me, he just seemed like this giant. I mean, he was really intimidating, because he's a painfully shy guy, and I don't think he even really totally wanted to be in the film. [Laughs.] So he was really just saying what he had to say and then getting out of there. Peter and everybody else made me feel very at home and welcome there, but there was no chit-chat with Kareem, and so when we went directly into him just collaring me, that was real. He was really shaking me around.”
For some reason I was never comfortable with it, it felt like appeasement on Kareem’s part. Reducing the man to a stooge. He’s the best basketball player who ever lived, it’s a shame his principled nature has dismissed that to the casual fan. Oscar Robertson, Isiah Thomas, hell even Rick Barry are overlooked due to that. Maybe it’s just me though, I much prefer Larry Bird to Magic Johnson so I could be applying my own sensibilities.
Lebron was asked what his “Mount Rushmore” is, that is to say the top 4 NBA players of all time. He put Jordan/Magic/Bird/Robertson over Kareem. The guy that got Lebron to the Heat, Pat Riley coached Kareem and had this to say many years prior.
"Why judge anymore? When a man has broken records, won championships, endured tremendous criticism and responsibility, why judge? Let's toast him as the greatest player ever."
-- Pat Riley
Not enough for King James apparently, all that Heat in Miami has fried his memory perhaps. He gets a modicum of credit for knowing who Oscar is though. Someone must have told him. At an HGH clinic. In the end it comes down to who controls the narrative. There is a debate surrounding how much Magic/Oscar helped Kareem get over the hump and the social impact Jordan which is reasonable. Curious what you guys think.
2. Milano/Toronto
Defense wrote:I hear Heidelberg is amazing as well, but Toronto is my home and Rob Ford aside it's a pretty cool place. Probably the most affordable "big market" in the world and it's growing fast. Good transit and it's very multicultural which I value. Ellen Paige and Drake went to my highschool for a few years, how cool is that? Brandon Pirri was in my class and used to brag a lot so I bet him 10 bucks I could kick his ass in basketball. He beat me 11-7 and I vowed from that day on I'd bulk up and beat him next time. He ended up getting drafted to the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2nd round of the NHL draft like 5 years ago.
Anyway, I was born in Milano so I have a soft spot for it (and Northern Italy in general). Their GDP has taken a huge hit due to a number of reasons and the government is corrupt but the natural beauty of the country, the language, the people are great. We associate music, scents and places with memories so I'm sure if I was born in Kansas or something I'd think it was the best. Objectively Toronto is a top 5 city by most metrics.

Re: Perfection
My perfect basketball player: Since my game is very limited due to lack of height and athleticism, I pride myself on being a great shooter and a smart point guard. I may not have the best handle or passing skills yet, but I'm working on them as well as a floater and a mid range game. Because of all that and how I want to mold myself, my perfect player is Steve Nash. If I can even come close to playing how he played back with the Suns, I'll be a very very happy person.
Perfect city: Unfortunately I haven't traveled too much. I love the lack of seasons here in Southern California (basically summer 9 months a year), makes things really easy, but the traffic in LA is awful. Personally, I'd want a nice, quiet suburb near a city like LA, San Diego, perhaps San Francisco. I don't want humid, I don't want too hot, and I don't want snowy winters. So that pretty much limits me to California haha.
Perfect woman: This one is easy. Despite my Asian fever when it comes to dating (the last 4 girls I've seriously dated have all been Asian), my perfect woman is Lucy Hale. The two things I would like most in a girl (in terms of physical appearance) is cuteness and petiteness. That's what makes Lucy Hale so perfect.

Re: Perfection
I don't know my perfect player or city, but god damn, my perfect woman is Kate Upton.
10/10
Of course, that's being entirely shallow and just because of looks, but oh well.

Re: Perfection
Perfect player: Same exact answer as BI. Kareem did it ALL in a dominating fashion. Ultra skilled, elite length/athleticism, world class defense and a lethal, unblockable shot.
Perfect city: Probably San Francisco. I do appreciate having 3 of the 4 seasons, but having lived in Wisconsin all my life, I am pretty done with winter. Portland is another city that I love.
Perfect woman: Tatiana Maslany
Smart, funny, talented, grounded and not to mention, incredibly attractive. She also has one of those infectious smiles, where you can't help but smile back when you see it.

Re: Perfection
Perfect player: Magic Johnson. There's something about a guard that is willing to win the game by keeping his teammates involved and getting them to their comfort zones on the court all while being able to flip a switch and dominate a game with ease.
Perfect city: Miami. Trained there a couple times and let me tell you, that place is beautiful. Gorgeous weather, the beaches are perfect, the ocean feels like bath water, the women are just... there's no place better for women lol. If I won the lottery and could afford a comfortable lifestyle that would be the place I would go.
Perfect woman: Jessica Alba. I could rant and rave about her, but I don't think a bunch of guys are wanting to listen.

Re: Perfection
My perfect player, is a tough call. I'll go with two of my favorite players. First off, Tracy McGrady. Wow, what an exciting player to watch during his Orlando and Houston days. I absolutely LOVE his jump shot, so smooth. His explosiveness and speed going to the rim were amazing. He had all the potential in the world to get up there with Jordan, Kobe, etc etc...but like Jeff Van Gundy said..."McGrady failed to maximize his potential and didn't ascribe to the theory that achieving greatness requires 10,000 hours of practice. Tracy McGrady was 1,000 hours of practice instead.".
Another player that I absolutely love but he saw his career cut very very short...is Brandon Roy. Yeah, I'm a bit of a homer with this pick but being able to watch him play almost every single Blazers game, was a real treat. He had poise, he was deceptively quick, next thing you know, he's at the rim and you're trying to catch up to him. His jumper was beautiful, from anywhere on the court. He single handily changed the "Jail Blazers" back to the Trail Blazers. He must have his number retired by Portland.
Perfect City? I've only ever lived in Portland, Gresham, and Hillsboro...and all three I love dearly. So I wont dive to much into that.
Perfect woman? Aside from Jessica Alba, Scarlett Johansson, and Stacy Keibler...My recent new celebrity crush is Lana Parrilla (click link for pic). My fiancée and I watch the show, Once Upon a Time (actually a very good show, sucked me right into it) and Lana plays the Evil Queen from Snow White...and wow. Not only is she just absolutely gorgeous in the show, but her character is such a badass too. She plays the part very well and keeps me wanting more. She's one of the highlights of the show for me.
