2014 CSL Combine
Presented by MSN-BC
Every year the best of the best amateur basketball athletes come together at the CSL Combine to show off their skills and try to boost their draft stock. Scouts, executives, and GMs from every team were in attendance to watch and evaluate the prospects in the hopes of finding the diamonds of this draft. A total of 64 players were in attendance, with the following players deciding not to participate.
This is, for most players, the last opportunity to put their name and skill set out there. Some players will be called in by teams for individual workouts, but for the most part, many of these players knew this was their last chance. Let's take a look at who shined and who didn't.
WINNERS
Kendall Williams
Williams showed off his ability as a very well-rounded point guard, highlighted by his ability to shoot and his mature status as a point guard mentally. He passes the ball well and plays defense too. Most scouts knew coming in that Williams was going to be one of the more ready-now players, but he really showed off in camp how CSL ready he really is.
Joel James
Despite for the most part being ranked much lower all year long, James showed in camp that he was as good as, if not better than, lottery-lock Willie Cauley. He was ranked by our scouting service as comparable in pretty much every single category, and since Cauley is so highly rated, James has to figure his stock moves up now with impact big men always heavily coveted.
AJ Hammons
This Purdue big man was the best offensive big man at the camp, showing off a variety of post moves and a soft touch around the basket. He was finishing well with both hands, and also showed capable abilities everywhere else on the court. With Len not attending, Hammons definitely took the mantle as best offensive big man as his own.
LOSERS
Isaiah Sykes
Sykes saw his stock rise earlier this year with reports about his scoring ability, but he struggled to make shots at the Combine. While he flashed an ability to find his own shot with ease, finishing was the hard part for him, and unless he can become a better shooter, his penchant for shooting may not be welcome in the CSL.
Jordan Adams
Despite being one of the best spot up shooters here, his lack of any other offensive skills (namely, passing and handling) and his inability to defend anyone overshadowed his impressive shooting performance. While shooting may be one of the most important parts of the game of basketball, leaving him on the court too long may make him a complete liability.
Alec Brown
Once touted as a 1st round pick, Brown showed exactly how raw he is. He did not look like a CSL player, unable to rebound, defend, or take care of the ball. He flashed an ability to shoot but didn't show any real ability to get his own shot, neither inside nor outside. He is still very dependent on other players to create his offense for him. This poor showing may actually make Brown think twice about declaring for the draft.
The complete evaluation of players is available for download. Deviations are as follows:
FGD FGI FGJ FG3 FT DRFL - +/- 6
SCR PAS HDL ORB DRB DEF BLK STL DI IQ - +/- 12

Re: CSL Combine Results
James and Hammons look like the big winners here as there are some teams in need of bigs at the top of the draft.

Re: CSL Combine Results
I'll say it now. Willie Cauley is the most overrated big in this draft. I've scouted all centers in the first round and there are maybe one or two guys I'd take over him.
I'd legitimately be surprised if he went top 10 or over those two guys.

I would have to agree. Can't get behind the hype around him.
But maybe a smokescreen because I could be able to draft him?

I'd draft Joel James for that pic alone.

Re: CSL Combine Results
If Magic Johnson and Hank Aaron had a kid somehow, and the kid had severe anxiety resulting in the occasional bout of constipation you'd have Joel James.

After reading that review of his combine performance, I pray he doesn't end up on your roster.

Why does every single player suck at shooting inside?
