Detroit Makes a Move, But Still Looking for a PG
DETROIT, MI -- After losing out of their 1st round pick to the Milwaukee Bucks in the passing CSL draft, the Pistons were not expected to be very active in the draft. With only a 2nd round pick and not a lot of depth, there wasn't much to be moved on the roster. There were a couple PGs that were of interest to the Pistons with their hole at the position, but nothing that was worth moving one of their four starters.
As the draft was underway, the Pistons saw some talent start to fall in the lottery and were in talks with Washington to take on some contracts for expiring deals that would give them more cap flexibility in the coming seasons. With nothing coming to agreement and the Wizards pick coming up, they both came to a decision that would help both teams get what they wanted out of the deal.
In came the contracts of Jamal Crawford and Wilson Chandler and out went the expiring deals of Jonas Jerebko and Vlad Kratsov. So why would the Pistons do this deal?
For that man. The Pistons saw Ellis, who was at one point in consideration as a Top 5 pick, drop all the way to pick #11. Also in the deal, the Pistons and Wizards swapped 2015 1st round picks.
The Pistons are hoping that Ellis lives up to the hype that surrounded him early in the draft process. He started to have his doubters as the scouting season went on, but the Pistons thought it was worth a chance.
"This was essentially a blind pick. We never sent any scouts to check Perry [Ellis] out because we didn't expect to even have a chance at him. It all worked out though and we are thrilled to have this young man on the team. We feel that he can be a contributor from day 1 and with some weight training should be a great back to the basket power forward down the line. We are very excited right now."
Early sights on him show that he has some talent, but this won't be known until after Training Camps are complete.

Ellis was a pretty good get for you. I'm really interested to see what else you do, as I really like your core... If I improve my team as much as I hope to, our division should be among the very best in the league next year.

Surprised to see him fall as far as he did but at the same time, a lot of the players picked above him made sense for their teams at that pick. He's got talent, now you just have to maximize it.

I came up about 5 minutes short and a little miscommunication in beating you to the punch on Ellis. Damn my luck.

Could end up being the true steal of the draft at the price you paid for him but will definitely have to find his niche in your offense.
I think Teague woulda been good for your ball club but that shipped sailed.

Yeah, I've been interested in Teague for a while and am still searching for my next starting PG while Jameer holds down the fort.
