Phoenix To Bank Cash For Next Offseason

Beno Udrih will take over starting point guard duties for the Suns next season, barring a major leap forward by Kendall Williams

The Phoenix Suns announced today that they will make no free agency signings after a controversial decision in the Isiah Thomas case, and the price for another free agent they were pursuing grew too rich for their tastes, despite a $48 million offer to that second player.

"After reviewing everything, we felt it in our best interests to decide who on the current roster isn't going to make the cut and roll forward with this team for next season," GM Jestor said. "With Kendrick Perkins, Darrell Arthur, Mirza Teletovic, Beno Udrih, and Donatas Motiejunas all coming off the books next offseason, adding an overpay for a player who doesn't quite fit our window doesn't make sense."

With the Suns already having $27.6 million in cap space that they'll roll over, the forthcoming money from the expiring contracts will give Phoenix $47 million in cap space next year, before payraises and rookie contracts are figured in - numbers which will still likely have the Suns boasting around $40 million in room to play alongside what should be an increasingly promising young core as the rebuild continues.

No reason to make a move for the sake of making a move. Sometimes the best move is the one you don't make.

Good luck this season.

Not a bad decision. You missed out on your main target in Isaiah Thomas and instead of spending money just to spend it, you get a chance to evaluate your roster, purge it of the dead weight and expiring deals and gain what would likely be another top pick in the draft.

It's smart moreso because it improves your lottery odds next season, but you're smart not to spend to preserve caproom for next season as well. The market for rebuilding teams started and ended with Thomas with Davis and Hayward being RFA.

Like everyone else said, good decision.  Would be interested to know who your second target was, but its got to be someone who already or is very close to signing.

Last year I didn't spend the cap and it allowed me to make the move for Carmelo and Sanders also so if you decide you're tired of waiting there is always that option since you'll have the space to absorb big salaries now.
