Recapping A Busy Week In Pacers History
LEGENDS TEAM UP IN INDIANA
It has been an incredibly busy week for Indiana Pacers GM Biz Gilwalker. He knew changes needed to be made if the Pacers were going to contend with the best of the best, and just didn't see the Paul George/Roy Hibbert/Paul Millsap core working out. "Getting knocked out in the first round was a major punch to the stomach," said Gilwalker. "I felt that in order to bring a championship to Indiana, I'd have to change things up. I needed to take some risks, make some big moves, and now there's an entirely different product out there on the floor. This team has the ability to go all the way."
After re-signing guard Lance Stephenson to a decent contract, it all started with the huge trade with OKC. The Pacers sent away their entire starting frontcourt of Paul George (20.0ppg, 7.2rpg), Paul Millsap (15.7ppg, 8.2rpg), and Roy Hibbert (12.7ppg, 7.7rpg, 2.0bpg) in exchange for current scoring champion and four-time MVP winner Lebron James (36.3ppg, 5.1apg, 5.4rpg), combo guard Jarrett Jack (13.5ppg, 6.5apg, 4.6rpg), swingman Jared Dudley (9.5ppg), rookies Mouhammadou Jaiteh and Aaron Craft, and a pair of draft picks.
"We weren't worried about Lebron's potential free agent status. While it may have seemed like an overpay, we were fully confident we could get a solid supporting cast around Lebron, and any time you get to trade for the best player in basketball, you absolutely have to do it."
The Pacers followed up that deal by trading combo guard Goran Dragic (15.4ppg, 5.6apg) to the Charlotte Bobcats for veteran center Brendan Haywood (7.6ppg, 7.2rpg), 2nd round prospect B.J. Young, a pair of draft picks, and almost $5M in cap space.
"We absolutely hate to see Goran leave. His half-season here was terrific. I wish him the best of luck."
The Pacers used that cap space to sign free agent legend Kobe Bryant (19.3ppg, 4.4apg, 3.9rpg) to a four-year deal worth $35.1M, pairing him with Lebron James. While at first glance Kobe Bryant's deal looks too long (it takes him to age 39), getting Kobe Bryant at just $8.7M is a pretty fair deal for his current production. "We had to do what we had to do to get him," said Gilwalker. "We wanted to make a Hall-of-Fame talent an offer he couldn't refuse. And he didn't."
The Pacers quickly followed this up by pulling off a sign-and-trade deal for Hall-of-Fame-lock power forward Dirk Nowitzki (16.8ppg, 7.1rpg), trading away point guard Darren Collison (10.5ppg, 5.1apg), guard Gerald Henderson (6.6ppg), and a pair of draft picks for the big German legend, signing him to a four-year deal worth $40M, with three years guaranteed.
"Obviously, after putting all our eggs into one basket with the Lebron trade, we were looking to put some talent around Lebron, and we've done just that. We've got three locks for the Hall of Fame on this team, and we're looking to get them all titles. We can't wait till the season starts."
The Pacers' tentative starting lineup figures to include Lebron James, Kobe Bryant, Dirk Nowitzki, Jarrett Jack, and Brendan Haywood, with Chris Kaman, Jared Dudley, Lance Stephenson, and a couple more minor free agent signings rounding out the bench. Rookies Aaron Craft and Mouhammadou Jaiteh figure to be in the D-League a lot, with second-year prospects T.J. Warren and B.J. Young at the end of the bench or in and out of the D-League as well.
Gilwalker acknowledges the risk in what he has done. "I'm a risk-taker. That's what I do. But I'm going to do everything in my power to bring a championship to Indiana. George wasn't the superstar everyone expected, Hibbert couldn't stay on the court for foul trouble. Anytime you get the opportunity to pull off a deal for the best player in basketball, you've got to do it. Lebron's only going to leave if we fail to put any kind of talent around him. He's got a pair of Hall-of-Famers around him now, both are proven champions. Was signing the veterans to long deals risky? Absolutely, but the payoff is too great to worry about that now. Till then, sit back and watch the Pacers rise to the NBA's elite.

PG - Jarrett Jack / Free Agent
SG - Kobe Bryant / Lance Stephenson
SF - LeBron James / Jared Dudley
PF - Dirk Nowitzki / Free Agent
C - Brendan Haywood / Chris Kaman
Awesome sauce.
You need to get on a vet PG and PF quick-like. You lock those two positions up, you're golden.

I think these were moves that had to be made and I don't see any downside in this if Indy makes it to the Finals or wins the title.
As far as peeps readily assuming Kobe and LeBron won't work (along with Dirk) due to high SCR rating, maybe one could be used as a super sub so that is a non issue imo.
I really really like the moves Biz, you're going for the win, these are championship moves.
Also the long term deals aren't huge imo either cause you have to field a team with or without LeBron and even an older Kobe and Dirk are more effective than most guys in the League.

I thought about that! I don't have the assets yet, I'll have to nab them in free agency in a few years.Jamal (NYK) wrote:Just realized BizGilwalker is trading for all the players in the banner of the forum!!

I honestly like the moves you made. I've seen LeBron take teams with less talent to the finals before, so adding in the likes of Kobe and Dirk to go along with Jarrett Jack and Brenden Haywood, not bad at all in my opinion. I wouldn't doubt it at all seeing Indy in the Finals.

I think the contracts for Kobe and Dirk are too long but moves you had to make to go for it all.

Re: Recapping A Busy Week In Pacers History
I wouldn't have gotten Kobe without the four-year deal. I offered the final year as a team option, but Kobe wouldn't have accepted. The final year of Dirk's deal is in fact a team option. So Kobe's under contract for four, but Dirk is only for three.Rizzo (NO) wrote:I think the contracts for Kobe and Dirk are too long but moves you had to make to go for it all.
You guys are overlooking what Jarrett Jack and Lance Stephenson have done recently. Jack averaged something like 13.5/6.5/4.5 on terrific shooting percentages starting for OKC while Lance showed off late in the season, and actually played on par with (an admittedly terrible) Paul George in the playoffs. I seriously think this team has the potential to win it all. Assuming I can get the role players around my core of course.

Going to be real interesting to see how it goes. There's no way within the sim engine to emulate how good superstar talents like LeBron or Jordan are so it will be interesting to see how a superstar within the engine goes carrying a team.

hahahaha, was a great one:D..
Would love to see Dirk winning another Ring. I will cheer for you like I did for Houston last year. Houston ended up being in the Finals, so it has to be a good sign, lol.
Anyway, not sure how those guys fit together. In Tim's league there is a team with Nowitzki, Kobe, Kidd etc and they didnt do pretty well. Yeah I know, there is no LBJ on the team.. Still not sure if the chemistry will be a problem.

Slight difference between Jason Kidd and Lebron James. I think we'll be just fine. The possibilities are endless. I expect some initial struggles as I try to see what rotations work and what rotations do not work. I essentially have a new team this season. Stephenson, Kaman, and Warren (D-League) are my only returning players.DennisJ (BOS) wrote:

Yeah, thats what I wanted to say. Team looks damn good on paper, but you have to be pretty active to figure out the best rotation/tactic possible. Just dont play a too high pace and not that much full court defense, dont want to see Dirk and Kobe injured:)BizGilwalker (IND) wrote:Slight difference between Jason Kidd and Lebron James.
