Klay Signs $44 Million Extension

"Klay lets out a slight grin when asked about his $44 million deal."

Klay Thompson just got paid. Probably overpaid. One of the Warriors' main priorities this season was the lingering expiring contract of 1/2 of the splash brothers. No longer could the team enjoy the luxury of those priceless rookie contracts. We knew Klay was going to get extended, that was a given. However, the question of how much dough the team was willing to fork over was unknown. Nonetheless, I think we all knew they weren't going to let their star slip away or head to free agency. Today it was announced that in collaboration with SDCP, the Warriors came to an agreement to have Klay sign on the dotted line for a 4-year contract worth $44,500,000. The team is now paying north of $20 million per season to keep the Splash Brothers together.

While his contract may be undesirable to some, as this will have him making more money than the likes of Russell Westbrook and John Wall, his talent is invaluable. Klay is off to a terrific start this season, shooting both 47% from the field and 47% from beyond the arc. He's also pulling in 5 assists and 5 board per game, career bests in both categories. Along with his 47% the team has Curry shooting at 49% from downtown, making this duo one hell of a 1-2 punch for anyone to face. We don't expect the money to stop flowing here either, as there are a few other contracts waiting for decisions as well. Both centers, 31-year old veteran Tyson Chandler and 22-year old Enes Kanter are eagerly waiting to see if either will get long term extensions. This is going to be a sticky situation and an interesting one to watch considering the trio of David Lee, Curry, Thompson will combine to make $39 million next year, taking up a huge chunk of the team's cap space.

I definitely thought that, due to Klay's 3pt ability, he was going to get attention this offseason. I can't remember the finer points of Jestorball, but you would have run that risk, I suppose.

Some may call it an overpay for a 1-dimensional player, but I get it. Doesn't seem unreasonable.

Yeah I would have gone hard after Klay. He's the perfect SG in a lot of my setups.

He can move the ball pretty well too. Only thing that bothers me is a 10M contract for a player who only plays one side of the ball..
