Davis Down, Pelicans Out?
With the All Star break fast approaching, the Pelicans have been biding their time for the return of Dion Waiters. Finally, their early season deal would become a reality when the injured Waiters would make his return to the court with the rest of his Pelican teammates. Rizzo was really excited to see what the core of Waiters, Marcus Smart, Anthony Davis and DeAndre Jordan could do to opposing teams. With three of them lethal scorers and all four of them intimidating defenders, could this have been a team of destiny?
In the team’s last game before getting a few days off for All Star festivities, the Pelicans traveled to Brooklyn to take on the Nets. There were losses a plenty in this one. First off, they lost on the scoreboard for just the 11th time all season. That’s a pill the Pelicans are willing to swallow. To add on top of the loss and the injured Waiters and a still hurting Gary Harris, Carl Landry (sore hip), Al-Farouq Aminu (sore wrist) and DeAndre Jordan (bruised biceps) all got hurt in this one. They first two, along with Harris, should all be 100% by the time games continue on February 20. Jordan’s make take a little longer to heal, but he’ll be good in about two weeks. But none of that can even describe the worst loss on the night.
In the middle of the third quarter, after already scoring 20 points and 12 rebounds while carrying the team with Marcus Smart struggling and DeAndre Jordan hurt, Anthony Davis fell to the floor clutching his knee and screaming in pain. He wasn’t touched before he went down and that was the scariest thing. He had to be carried to the locker room by team trainers and exanimated. The news came back almost immediately: Davis had torn his MCL. Davis will now be sidelined for the next 9+ months while he recovers from the brutal injury.
The Pelicans have gone from the Vegas favorites to now a team not expected to go far in the playoffs. Rizzo has not given up on the season though and believes the roster still has the talent to make some noise. They will make the playoffs and their goal now is to make sure they secure a Southwest Division title and claim home court advantage in the opening round. From there, they will take it one game at a time trying to play their hearts out for their injured leader.

Hate to see talented players like Anthony Davis going down.
Tough luck, but your team is very young and very talented. No doubt you guys will be favored as top spor next season.

Damn that sucks man. You still have a lot of talent on the team and might be able to make a run, but its going to be an uphill battle and Portland and Utah have to be smiling just a little more today, even if it is a bad way to get an advantage.

Tough loss man, it's sad to see that happen, and more with the great season you're having.

Well, you're not out of it yet, but it would be an absolute miracle if you ended up at #1 in the WC by season's end. You're only a game ahead of Portland and a few ahead of Utah, and I doubt you hold them off.

Agreed. Our goal is top-4 in the West right now.

Tough loss man. I know how it feels. It's been two seasons for me. Just gotta weather the storm and keep your team in a position to succeed in the postseason.

I'd say the way you built your team, you'd be prepared to a Smart loss, but not a Davis one.
Though loss for sure, can only say I'm sorry about you. But you have pieces to get another PF to replace Davis, and we must not count a team with Smart to be down because of one injury.
Best of luck with the rest of the season mate!

Yeah that's real rough. Deandre should be able to cover some of the void, but you'll need a scoring PF to help him out. I think you'll figure it out though.

There isn't an obvious bright side to this but I really want to see what Smart does with the extra shots and usage %. He could enter the Durant tier this season which would benefit your team when Davis comes back.

Re: Davis Down, Pelicans Out?
Davis loss is colossal but I don't think it ends your chances. I mean, Waiters comes back after the All-Star break and that alone is going to give you the best backcourt in the league. You still have DeAndre in the paint and I expect his numbers to increase. Landry should be able to step in just fine if you put him there. You still have one of the better teams in the conference so yall should be able to make some noise. Won't be surprised to see the Pelicans in the conference finals at all.

Re: Davis Down, Pelicans Out?
Although it's going to hurt without Davis in your lineup for the time being, your team seems deep enough to make a run in the playoffs. Hey, it's all about getting in. Once you're in, it's only about the hot hand. So maybe you strike it rich with someone on your roster, there's definitely some possibilities there. Besides, injuries are the true test of a franchise. Good luck man!
