Free & Clear - Teams with Cap Space Heading into Free Agency

Note: This excludes teams who have retained bird rights to players that would have cap space if not for the current cap hold. These figures are taken directly from the HTML, less than a few moments ago.

PHX : $27,668,732 - Jestor has all but made an offer for Isaiah Thomas at this point. Although I doubt PHX uses all of this cap space this year, I fully anticipate an overpay for the diminutive guard currently manning the point in South Beach.

MIN : $25,235,100 - Quite a bit of cap this off-season, but saving for next year may be challenging considering Parsons' likely ask. Center is priority #1 for the Wolves and there are quite a few to pick from. Look for defense to be the key focus when filling the low post next to Love.

CHA : $24,525,608 - This roster has quite a bit of flexibility regarding positional needs. Even though the Bobcats have Asik on roster, word is they are targeting another Center. Additionally, there are a few PFs available that intrigue and the potential for very nice bench depth.

LAL : $18,261,019 - Stoudemire opting out came as a shock to everyone. With $18 million to spend, key needs for a legitimate playoff squad are PF and SF, in that order. Frankly, Stoudemire would have looked great next to Horford - as it were, AK has the ability to look elsewhere. My money is on a 1-year deal to a veteran PF. It seems LAL is looking towards next years' free agent class more. That being said, there are quite a few starting caliber SFs that LAL should consider long-term. Both Granger and Deng come to mind here.

WAS : $17,441,830 - Washington needs major help on the wings. Both SG and SF need to be addressed, but locking in a veteran Center next to Griffin should also be a consideration. I'm just not sure that Griffin and Val can/should coexist in the frontcourt.

SAC : $7,183,502 - Our fearless leader will look to nab a few trade chips in this free agency, I'm sure. As cap space is spent elsewhere by other teams, there will always be valuable players that slip.

ORL : $6,739,635 - I think Orlando stays put. No real need to do anything outside of letting the young guys develop. Will have more cap space next year and, at that point, a much better idea of team needs given the development of the young guns.

MIL : $6,439,447 - I'm sure Riot would love to tack some pieces onto his core, what would be possible and who would be a good target at this point? Riot may, in fact, have more cap space once Faried nabs a contract.

POR : $3,836,780 - It's worth noting that Portland may have more space, once Avery Bradley decides what to do.

NOP : $1,055,179 - Haha. Good luck.

Nice overview. Five teams have a ton of the space and the rest are kinda in an awkward position.

Really interested to see how it plays out... Especially with the new PA element.

Love articles like these, very informative and get me pumped for FA. Thanks for doing this.

We'll see what we're gonna do with our 7 mill of cap space. Would love to free up some more, but doesn't seem likely.

BTW, these are all cap spaces without player cap holds.

Including them, MIN shaves off about $0.90m, CHA about $1.4m, LAL about $2.8m, etc...

Well, without cap holds we have over 26 million in space which would put us second but I fully expect to keep my holds and bring my guys back before seeing what I have left.

Don't worry, we will be sure to not spend it all in one place.

great writeup - we'll see how we are going to use our cash - most likely to sign a solid veteran or two at PG/SF

Another great article, if we renounced our FA we might be a player in FA but would have to move Pekovic as well. WAS could get good fast with all that caproom, and obviously CHA has a ton of flexibility as well. If I'm MIN I'm all in with offers to one of Bogut/Varejao and the rest on a 3rd wing and big man depth. Love is a FA next season so they have to make a strong playoff push.

Jestor is doing the right thing by him and the league going after Thomas. Thomas had a Lawson like impact last season and it's hard to get a PG of that caliber in FA + Thomas back to MIA makes the difficult task of beating them damn near impossible. LAL should go for 1 year value contracts.

I would have a bit of cap space if I hadn't traded for Mayo, but I'll take the gamble on Mayo.
