Scheyer Suns' Shooting Guard Savior?
Lanky 27 Year Old Will Get His Shot
Jon Scheyer brings exceptional 3 point shooting skills
It's been a tough road for 27 year old guard Jon Scheyer. A part-time start for Charlotte in the 2012 season, since then he's become a min-sal journeyman, bouncing from the Bobcats to the 76ers to the Celtics and now to the Phoenix Suns, where he'll go from garbage time minutes to a starting job in the offense-oriented Jestorball scheme.
A career 43.4% shooter, 43.2% from behind the arc, Scheyer is a player who almost never looks for his own shot, but on a Sun squad that's made Kendall Marshall one of its primary scorers, he'll get more looks than one might expect, particular with floor general master beside him. More importantly, at 6'6, he carries the length Jestorball craves in its 2 guards and in fact makes the lineup as follows:
PG Marshall - 6'4
SG Scheyer - 6'6
SF Porter - 6'9
PF Sullinger - 6'9
CE McGary - 6'11
But what really captured Phoenix's attention after Scheyer was released by the Celtics was his exceptional defense, illustrated by his 100% drive stop rate. Granted, the sample size is small, but scouts have raved about his defensive ability, discipline, and intelligence. The question now becomes what happens to the minutes for Anthony Bennett, Royce White, and J.J. Redick. Will Phoenix keep using Otto Porter at both wing spots, or will they put him at exclusive at SF, thereby cutting into AB15 and White's minutes, and putting Redick in a reserve SG role? If Porter does stay at both wing positions, then it's Redick who will get dropped from the rotation, although another possibility is to still keep the Suns' best two-way player at both SG and SF, but reduce his SG minutes to eliminate White or Bennett from the regular rotation, while still giving PT to Redick.
The drop in natural scoring instinct also likely means more minutes for the other four players in the Suns' lineup, who are all solid (Marshall, Porter) to excellent (Sullinger, McGary) shooters in their own right. Certainly the perimeter defense should improve with the change - Redick is stopping just 55.9% of drives.

Never realized that Scheyer was rated that well as a defender. Could be a sneaky good pickup by the Suns here.

Great signing Jestor.
Really love this type of situations where a player comes from nearly no-play role and it's given the chance to start and prove he's worth it.
Hope he can consolidate as your starting SG.

Really liked Scheyer - would have gone after him had I known BOS dropped him. Feel the same way that Jestor does about him. Perfect (super) low-usage, 3&D guy.

Wish I had known BOS dropped him since he would have fit in real good here.
