No Mayo, No Faried for Dallas

Dallas, TX

When the Atlanta Hawks Front Office contacted Tanner Owen, General Manager of the Dallas Mavericks, in regards to a three team trade with the Bucks that would land them OJ Mayo and Kenneth Faried, Owen was quick to agree to the trade, despite them having to give up defensive stopper Wesley Matthews and the young big in Cody Zeller (along with [Alex] Poythress and [Jared] Cunningham). Owen had said about the trade, "We hate to lose Zeller as we really liked what we saw from him, as well as Wesley Matthews, who is fantastic on defense, but with the addition of Faried and Mayo, it completes the starting five a little bit more."

Mavericks Owner Mark Cuban, wasn't very happy to find that the deal had fallen through.

Although, things didn't work out for Dallas, as the trade could not be processed due to an overlooked contract situation regarding Kenneth Faried. "I had assumed that everything had been looked at by the other two teams, so I went along with it...It's a damn shame that it wasn't able to go through. Mark had a pretty serious and stern talk with me after we all found out the trade wasn't going through. Told me to do my research a little more better...We disappointed thousands and thousands of fans. I assured Mark that it would not happen again." Owen said after the news broke out about the trade.

Tons of Mavericks fans tweeted about the situation, a lot of them showing their displeasure towards management about the trade.

Tanner Owen, when asked about what happened and how he felt, "To be honest, I was a little bit embarrassed about it. I kick myself for not asking more questions and making sure things we going to fall in place. That wont happen again, I can assure you that." We asked if he was trying to get either player in a separate deal, "I've talked with the front office of the Milwaukee Bucks about both players. Kenneth Faried will not be joining the Dallas Mavericks anytime soon unfortunately. OJ Mayo on the other hand, is still a possibility. Talks died down a little bit but we still plan to try and get him on the team." Owen said.

In other news, we have insight that the Mavericks are looking to acquire another player in a trade but couldn't get a name. Owen is very particular about details and information he gives out regarding potential trades, said that he doesn't want to get anyone's hopes up, that he's learned his lesson.

Definitely a shame things didn't go through. Tell Cuban that the blame falls on us in Milwaukee! Smile You've done a great job bringing talent to Dallas, and I'm sure you'll continue that trend, even if Faried is not a part of the picture anymore.

Yeah, Faried's contract situation went over my head as well, my fault. You make the playoffs with the roster you started with and I don't think anyone else is even in contention for GMOY. Goodluck.

Thanks for the feedback guys, it's all good that things didn't work out. Maybe it was the best for all three teams. We'll see how the season goes.

Agree with op, terrible news for the Mavs as the Bucks and Hawks do damage control.

What's worse is now the market has probably been set for the players involved in the original deal.

What's good is hopefully you have the capspace to go after Faried.

Qusetion though: Did you trade Patric Young in preparation of getting Kenneth Faried? Knowing what you know now (deal wasn't able to go thru) would you still make the Boston trade?

I'd say BOS trade was great for them regardless. No one comes close to Vuc at the #6 spot, and they also netted a very productive player in Hill and a future first.

I still would have done the deal regardless. Boston and I worked on that deal for quite some time. The deal for Faried just came out of no where much after I made the deal with Boston.

Oh ahright, wasn't sure it was a contingent on Faried coming to Dallas deal or not since he'd be replacing a beast of a PF on the rise in P Young "Go Gators!".

Trading Young sucked, I wanted to hang on to him but I felt that I was getting a good package in Vuc, DeRozan, Hill, and a future first that looks like it could be pretty decent in a couple of years...At least I'm hoping, hah hah.

Getting Vuc in that deal was a coup for you. He is by far and away the best player of the deal.

Must be tough because Faried would have been really solid for you. Still got a nice deal though with Vuc/DeRozan and them.

Yeah seems to be a bad trade for us. This draftclass really sucks as it seems. Getting young, Muhammad and Abrines for vucevic in return was okay, but was hoping for more at #6.. Seems Im interpreting grades wrong Smile.. Maybe time to step down as GM, gambled to much. After looking at last years rookies I assumed it was a good idea to go young.. But it looks like Vuc (or McGary, a top 10 pick last year) is even better than Len, haha. Epic fail. Seems I have to take the consequences and let somebody else take care to get this franchise on top again..

Muhammad is basically what I thought he'd be. Potential to be a great scorer but lacking elsewhere. Len also seems to be about on the level of Vuc for me. A little more scoring in exchange for rebounding?

The Vuc trade wasn't too bad IMO, but general rule of thumb for me is never de-consolidate/break up your top assets. Maybe you could've looked at other options at #2, and if you scouted Randle/Harrison more it would've been apparent that they're also on Len's level. It seemed you were fixated on Len as soon as you got the pick.

Again, not a bad move IMO, but keeping Vuc and drafting one of Randle/Harrison might've been more worthwhile instead of breaking him up into Bazz/Young/Abrines and drafting a replacement.

Also worth noting is that that the potentials you see now aren't accurate.
