Season Preview: 2014-15 Indiana Pacers CMLdQoj

Very rarely does a young, winning team blow it up and bring back zero of its starters the next season.  It's also very rare to make a trade for the best player in the entire league, Lebron James. That's just what the Pacers did this off-season. After trading away their top three players in Paul George, Paul Millsap, and Roy Hibbert for Lebron James, and a number of assets, including guard Jarrett Jack, then trading away guards Darren Collison and Goran Dragic to make room to sign future Hall-of-Fame talents Kobe Bryant and Dirk Nowitzki, the Pacers brought back just three players from last year's team: backup wing Lance Stephenson, backup center Chris Kaman, and young prospect T.J. Warren, the Pacers essentially platoon-swapped the team.

"Ultimately, that will go down as one of the toughest decisions a GM will have to make- whether to trade away almost your entire core for the best of the best or not," said Pacers GM Biz Gilwalker in an interview. "We gave up so much, but when you're chasing the Durant-led Miami Heat in this eastern conference, you've got to beat them with star power, and it doesn't get any more powerful than Lebron James. We didn't have a superstar, and in a league like this, you've got to do what you've got to do to get a guy like Lebron or KD. We're going to bring home that title this year, man. Mark my words."

Let's take a run through the roster:

Brendan Haywood / Chris Kaman / Greg Stiemsma / Mouhammadou Jaiteh
Dirk Nowitzki / Marreese Speights
Lebron James / Jared Dudley / TJ Warren
Kobe Bryant / Lance Stephenson / B.J. Young
Jarrett Jack / Jimmer Fredette / Aaron Craft

Let's start from the top:

The Starting Unit:
Season Preview: 2014-15 Indiana Pacers 1000
The tentative starting center is BRENDAN HAYWOOD. The veteran center averaged 8 points and 8 rebounds a game for Charlotte last season and maintained the steady defensive presence he's been known for all these years.
Season Preview: 2014-15 Indiana Pacers 609
DIRK NOWITZKI is the obvious starter at the 4. He averaged 17 and 7 for Denver last season. His ability to space the floor is key with Lebron and Kobe getting to the rack whenever they want. At 35, Dirk has likely signed his final big contract, and obviously wants a ring.
Season Preview: 2014-15 Indiana Pacers 1966
The prize of the offseason, LEBRON JAMES is definitely the best player in the CSL right now. After averaging a league-high 36.3 points a game last on insane efficiency, not much more needs to be said, the rest of his game has not suffered and he'll undoubtedly be the team's go-to option night after night, but he'll have plenty of help with two Hall-of-Fame on either side of him in the lineup.
Season Preview: 2014-15 Indiana Pacers Kobe_bryant_65
Not to be overshadowed is KOBE BRYANT, who still has more than plenty left in the tank. Kobe single-handedly willed last season's 7th seed Charlotte Bobcats to an upset over this Pacers team just a few months ago. While not what he once was, he still managed a superb 24/4/4 in 15 playoff games. Don't expect exorbitant stats from Kobe, as he shares with once-rivals Lebron and Dirk, but he'll remain a lethal option on this team.
Season Preview: 2014-15 Indiana Pacers 2768
Often looked at as a throw-in in the Lebron deal, JARRETT JACK is looking to prove himself not only a capable point guard, but a very good one. After averaging 13.5/6.5/4.6 on terrific shooting percentages for a guard for OKC last season, Jack looks to improve on those numbers with his diverse skillset, and his ability to hit threes will be a great asset next to Lebron.

The Bench Mob:

Season Preview: 2014-15 Indiana Pacers Chris_kaman
One of the few mainstays from last year's team is CHRIS KAMAN, 7'0 center. United with fellow German, Dirk, might help him a little this season, and he should see plenty minutes at center, as he and Brendan Haywood will split minutes at center this season. Kaman averaged nearly a double-double per 36 minutes, seeing plenty of opportunity behind the foul-prone Roy Hibbert.
Season Preview: 2014-15 Indiana Pacers Greg_stiemsma
It's always nice to have a guy like GREG STIEMSMA as extra bench depth. Per 36 minutes, he averages nearly a double-double, with FOUR blocks. Solid free throw shooting and few turnovers would have him pushing most teams for regular backup minutes.
Season Preview: 2014-15 Indiana Pacers Marreese_speights
Recent signee MARREESE SPEIGHTS should have no problem working his way into the main rotation. He was very productive, averaging a double-double per 36 minutes and providing a steady paint presence on both ends last season for Philadelphia. As an added bonus to his terrific presence, Speights shot a career-best 81% from the free throw line last season.
Season Preview: 2014-15 Indiana Pacers Dudley_mug
Another ex-Thunder "throw-in" looking to prove himself, JARED DUDLEY has had enough of being known as just average. He wants to be known for his shooting, his ability to defend, and he believes he is a perfect fit next to Lebron James. Shooting 38% from deep, like he did off the bench last year for OKC, is definitely a good start.
Season Preview: 2014-15 Indiana Pacers 153288777
After a playoff run playing on par with Paul George, shooting fantastically, and averaging 14/4/4, LANCE STEPHENSON was rewarded with a five-year contract and a promise from the Pacers for him to remain their 6th man, Lance is on a mission to prove his playoff run was no fluke. His tenacity and improving jumper are great traits next to Lebron.
Season Preview: 2014-15 Indiana Pacers 6434
It seems that JIMMER FREDETTE has never been given a true chance. Bouncing around the league since he was drafted, Jimmer hopes he's found a home as a three-point specialist playing off of three Hall-of-Fame locks. A lights-out shooter, Jimmer shot 46% from both the field and from downtown last season.

The Prospects:
BJ YOUNG, AARON CRAFT, MOUHAMMADOU JAITEH, AND TJ WARREN are all unlikely to crack the rotation, and will more than likely rotate in and out of the D-League.

Contender or pretender?

Any team with Lebron James on it probably has a free ride to a solid playoff seed. You add two Hall-of-Famers in Kobe and Dirk, then fill out the rest of the roster with solid fits and interesting talents, you've got a team that can rival any team. This is much better than last year's squad. Contender.

I think you are a contender. You might hit some (or a lot of) road bumps defensively with this team and it may hinder your success, but you'll need to adjust accordingly.

Big thing now for you is to try and acquire long term assets any way you can to keep Bron in Indy.

The East is wide open, Miami lost too much with Chandler Gasol Splitter leaving or being traded and the Pacers have the tools to get the job done as I think Indy snatching up Kobe crippled the ECF's Cats/ Hornets.

Gonna be tight all season but then again you do have LeBron and Dirk which I love, Kobe is gonna be the X Factor and once you figure out the strategy (if you even need to) that team is gonna be special.

The question is for how long?

Nice read man.

I really like the moves. James makes an team a contender. I'd give you a slight edge in the East. Also, happy that so many quality players are now playing for East teams  Very Happy

great read man!

Like already said I like the team on paper but you got the task to get things going.
Will be fun to develope the Sub and Tacs that fit perfectly to your squad.
No doubt, you got the players to make a run but you need to get them work together.

You did what I wanted to do, but could not.. You had way more flexibility than me to surround James with other pieces..
You look like a contender..

In my opinion, Indy is the new favorites in the East. Miami and Charlotte will not be able to handle LeBron when it comes down to it. Even if they do, there's still Dirk and Kobe. I see Indy making the finals.

Definitely a contender in the East, rebounding and depth (particularly in the frontcourt) might be an issue but Lebron/Kobe is going to be a nightmare matchup for us.

A team with a lot of stars and mvp's, i believe that isn't enougth balls for all.
Depend the tactic, if the tactic is wrong, this team can be a problem for indiana GM.
Will see the results i think that can win 60 games.

Your win now bet is clear, and with all this talent it's sure a possibility. Personally I do think you compromised your future a bit with Kobe's signing if he retires, but who wouldn't do it for the chance to wining it all right now?

A team with LeBron needs not much more around to be successful, and although I would have chosen to build with role players around him rather than stars, what you did is just a nice opcion, and most sure the best one.

The only bad thing I see right now it's that there's to much pressure on this team, and that every other team would like to beat this new three headed monster and take credit for it (we already have the first MSG appearance for the new Pacer LeBron inked in red in our schedule). But that shouldn't affect you much. This team is build to contend, and just needs to reach the postseason healthy. You'll have a tough battle with Detroit and Cleveland (and maybe the Bulls too) for the division though, so definitely a fun season ahead in the east, specially in the Central division Wink

I think the Pacers will definitely struggle defensively, but for this one year, how can you stop this offense? Going to be fun to watch the Pacers gel as a team this year.

I've said this before, but I'll say it again here: Really impressed, not only by the guts it took to make these moves, but by the cap management you used to make it happen. That was some serious number crunching, my friend!

On to Kobe - it's interesting to hear Willy mention that losing Kobe hurt us (Charlotte). We actually never offered Kobe another contract. Kobe, for whatever reason, has really poor handles in this sim and he dropped off significantly in that regard this offseason. I was worried about his ability to handle the rock at SG. What I had considered was giving Kobe half the minutes available at SG and then the backup minutes at SF. But then we traded for Tyreke. He's younger and a much more complete player.

I actually feel like that move improved us, as opposed to sending us the opposite direction.

Plus, I was never going to outcompete that 4 year deal. I was really only open to offering Kobe (and Dirk) one year deals.

Yeah I definitely agree Kobe has a ridiculously low HDL rating, on to my point about losing Kobe weakening your team.

Tyreke has very comparable ratings to Kobe but he isn't as good a FT or 3pt shooter and doesn't have the IQ KB24 has, I think that'll directly affect MKG as I think Kobe helped you against those zone heavy defenses along with Marshall running the show which is now being taken over by a score first PG with a scoring SG whose best asset is driving/ drawing fouls. Getting Amare helped tremendously though. Could go on but don't wana completely highjack the Pacer thread when my other point was they're in the East, a rival, and now have Kobe.

Kobe has always turned the ball over at a high rate in the NBA, so I'm not surprised to see him with a low HDL rating actually.

Love this team. So many stars, so much talent, Indiana is definitely a contender in the East, right up there with Miami and Chicago.
