Rockets Report: Rockets Draft Ondrej Balvin
With the 26th pick of the 2014 CSL Draft, your Houston Rockets selected Czech bigman Ondrej Balivin.
Name: Ondrej Balvin
Position: C
Height: 7'1"
Weight: 261lbs
Country: Czech Republic
Drafted: 26th Overall
We caught up with both Head Coach Rudy Tomjanovich and GM WillyJakkz to get their input into this move in what some say was a Draft Day surprise.
With the Draft now over, the Rockets will now turn their focus onto the Free Agent front where they look to retain SF Andre Iguodala who played a pivotal role in the Rockets success. No word has been reported regarding whether Houston will be able to bring Manu Ginobili back into the mix as well as he also was key in their success.
Stay tuned for more news and updates!

Well all I know is we were extremely pleased that Ondrej fell into our laps at #26, for a moment there we were kinda worried when the Wolves were back on the clock picking before us but we kinda had a feeling they would pass on him since they got Cauley-Stein at #8 I believe... Uh, he's a big body and that's something we definitely coulda used in the Finals this past June once Bismack was injured so now we have that and I look forward to seeing how he can get caught up to the speed of the CSL but he seems pretty heady and I think he'll adjust just fine... I was impressed with his rebounding of the basketball, in particular on the the offensive side and WillyJakkz raved about him in his workouts and once I got a look at the kid I was sold and I think he'll be able to do some of the things he did in his workouts in game situations for us and we look forward to getting him into camp and competing with Andrea and Bismack for minutes... Thanks guys.
His rebounding and his height were mesmerizing to say the least... He's also a very smart player and that is something you really can't put more of an emphasis on and this kid gets it...he gets it and we were thrilled to have him fall to us at #26 as Coach eluded to... We worked him out consistently, probably more than any one player and we knew we wanted him and fortunately things worked out and we got him... Uh there was Payne on the board still and it was briefly discussed but I looked at the guys, looked at Coach and said "Rudy...trust me, we already have Tristan on board, he's a young PF and no offense but we don't need another one, we need this guy" and that's all I had to say as they pretty much agreed that C was a more pressing need than PF and the rest is as they say history... We look forward to getting him in camp and Summer League as well to see how he performs against his peers throughout the League while also gauging how he meshes with what we have here so we're excited...we're pretty excited... Well yeah after losing in the Finals like that you always hope to learn a lesson and hopefully we've addressed a hindrance of ours by bringing Ondrej in... Ok guys thanks, look forward to it!

He's much, much rawer than I expected, and he probably won't see the court for a couple of years, but once he develops a bit, he should be useful as a big bodied post defender off the bench.
Decent project and well worth being picked IMO.

Yeah a solid pick who will help as a big off the bench in a couple seasons.

I liked Tarc a whole lot more, thought he would have been drafted way earlier than Balvin.
Maybe not, that's just what I saw when I scouted the two.

Make sure to also post this in the relevant draft pick thread. The picks themselves should have articles attached

Saw them both as decent prospects at nearly the same age, Balvin's IQ is much more impressive than Kaleb's (who isn't bad) which made Balvin the better prospect for what I project outta him vs Kaleb's projections but Kaleb wasn't even in the equation in my war room, it was Balvin or Payne.
Had they both been selected I would've selected Kaleb.

The question with guys who have to develop always is will they be on your roster by the time they can contribute? Nobody wants to do the dirty work developing players and then have other teams benefit from it.

Yeah definitely... there are quite a few lurkers ready to pounce on guys and at the same token guys close to developing usually are near the end of their contracts which make the decision to keep em, trade em, or let em leave all the more important.

If he develops into a dependable backup center for the next decade you got a steal. Don't know much about him unfortunately.

At 26, if he ends up contributing down the line (maybe after a few years overseas), this could end up being a big steal.
