Rockets Report: Andre Returns!
The Dynamic Duo Returns as star Andre Iguodala signs a 5yr/ $67.5M deal to remain with the Rockets! The deal breaks down to $13.5M per season for 4yrs with the 5th yr being a Player Option/ ETO (Early Termination Option) meaning the player has the choice to opt out of his contract to once again test the FA market.
Clutch City fans were ecstatic about the breaking news as the fan dubbed Andre "The Rocket" made his way to the Rockets practice facility to officially ink the deal with Rockets GM WillyJakkz.
Well first and foremost we'd like to thank everyone for attending so let's get this started... We'd like to announce the signing of a vital part of our success here in Houston, a player we felt from Day One could come in here and have an immediate positive impact on the ballclub and one who would fit in very well with the established centerpiece on the team and we're very fortunate to retain Andre's services as he was priority number 1 for us during this FA period... Well now we could focus on other players out there now, with Andre back it gives not only us as a team a clearer picture of what the team will look like but other FA's and their respective Agencies as well... Well it uh takes the uncertainty out of the equation, they know we have a base of Harden and Iguodala to build with along with our other players so they can see a clear vision of us bringing back our Finals team and hopefully it makes us a more enticing destination... Well we had a set number truthfully that we were willing to pay to retain Andre as a player while also realizing the pay scale of the players here in tow, James in particular so we went about our negotiations with that in mind and admittedly were not willing to cross that line... No I wouldn't say it was a hard stance, just more about the order of things in our eyes and fortunately we were able to keep things in order which is not to say one guy is more important than the next but there is indeed an order in which a team and players function and we had to keep that order established... Yes I informed Andre and his Agent we would respect any decision made and if the order of things were going to be risked we would accommodate Andre and his Agent by facilitating a Sign & Trade and there was a point when we felt that may in fact have been a reality and we were ready to move forward with that as an option but fortunately Andre ultimately decided to return to Houston where we are ecstatic to have him!..... Well without any further ado here is Andre...
Happy...happy that it's over and we got this done and I'm very happy to be here in Houston... Well there were obviously offers out there that make you think I mean, that's what being a FA is all about but Houston is where we chose to stay and I couldn't be happier about returning and hopefully we'll be able to compete once again at a high level...we got some unfinished business... I think I'll be able to contribute at a high level for the entire contract...no reason to think otherwise... Just happy to get it done and ready to get in Training Camp with guys and get prepared for the season...
Well let's make this official! (Pulls out pen) Any more questions....
(Reporters chime in)....

I actually almost offered 13 mil per year for 4 years with something like 3% raises, but I was told it wasn't the best offer on the table, so I backed off.
The one thing you needed to do this offseason was resign him, and you did that, so good job.

Curious as to your intentions.
You have Chandler McLemore, was this an asset ploy or attempt to weaken a rival?
Wouldn't have expected Minny to chase him.

Nah, wasn't an attempt to weaken a rival. I don't think it's a smart decision to throw money at someone you don't want.
But as to my intentions, I have cap space out the ass and a hole at SF behind Parsons. I could have kept Iggy at 6th man and made him the 6MOY hands down, or move Chandler to 6th man and do the same thing. Spending 13 million on him allows me to have 12 million left to pursue ANOTHER free agent.
He's the premiere free agent this offseason, so I thought "why not" and just asked the agent about him, but since you were able to offer an extra year, I just didn't have the firepower to bring him in unless I wanted to spend 15/yr on him, which would be way over market value imo and not worth it for a 6th man, not to mention I wouldn't have a whole lot of money left for a guy at center.

I'm not sure how valuable he will be in the 5th year, but that might have been a tipping point in the decision making process for him if Minny was willing to give that contract and was told it wasn't the best offer. Houston did what they had to do and now just needs to tweak their roster rather than retool.

@jake: True, just thought C woulda been priority one for you but definitely see the reasoning, also gives you option to keep or move Parsons.
@rizzo: Iggy's kinda paid based on performance from past season and future projections and 5th yr sort of a reward. He played so well for us and upped his stock regardless of that fifth yr.
His contract is definitely worth his 19/7/5/1/1 performance especially compared to his CSL peers, $67.5M is a helluva deal when others have gotten much more imo.
